January 2019: A wolf moon

The moon draws our eyes upward. When I was a little girl, my mother taught me a little poem. It went like this: I see the moon. The moon sees me. God loves the moon. And God loves me. There may be many variations to this poem, but this is the one that I recited as I looked at the night sky.

Later in elementary school, I learned how the moon controls the oceans as it draws the waves in to shore and back out again. In the Bible, God warns us that we may be tempted to worship the sun, moon, and stars when we view their breathtaking beauty.

In this new year, right away on January 20 and 21, we will be entertained by a super, blood moon. It is called super because the moon will be as close to earth as it gets. It is super due to the way the light hits the moon during the eclipse as the sun, moon, and Earth are perfectly lined up.

It was nicknamed a wolf moon by the native American Indians who heard wolves howling as they hunted for their food. The name of the moon in August, the month of my birth, is the sturgeon moon. It was called this because the sturgeon fish were plentiful during that time.

What is the full moon called in the month that you were born?
